How to Pack Light for Camping

April 2, 2026 · 6 min read

Car camping has no excuses for overpacking. Follow this checklist and fit everything in one duffel bag for weekend trips.

The Golden Rule

If you haven't used it on your last 3 trips, you won't use it on this one. Leave it at home.

Weekend Packing List (30 lbs max)

What's Actually Optional

Camp chairs (sit on logs), tables (use a flat rock), extra shoes (one pair is fine), books (phone works). Less gear = more adventure.

The average first-time camper brings twice as much gear as they need. Here's how to pack for a weekend trip in a single bag.

The Golden Rule

If you haven't used it on your last 3 trips, you won't use it on this one. Leave it at home.

The One-Duffel Challenge

Set a 30-pound limit for weekend car camping. Everything fits in one large duffel bag. If it doesn't fit, you don't need it.

Essential Packing List

Clothing (3 Days Max)

  • 2 t-shirts
  • 1 long sleeve (bug/sun protection)
  • 2 shorts/pants
  • 3 underwear
  • 3 socks (merino wool = less washing)
  • 1 jacket (always pack this, even if forecast looks good)
  • Sandals or camp shoes

Sleeping System

  • Sleeping bag (in compression sack)
  • Sleeping pad (strapped to outside)
  • pillow (or stuff a fleece in a pillowcase)

Camp Kitchen

  • Stove + fuel (in outer pocket)
  • Lighter (in outer pocket)
  • Cookware (nested, inside bag)
  • Food (in cooler)
  • Water bottles (2, full at departure)

Essentials

  • Headlamp (in outer pocket)
  • First aid kit (in outer pocket)
  • Sunscreen + bug spray
  • Toiletries
  • Map + compass or phone with offline maps

Total: About 25 lbs for a complete weekend setup.

What's Actually Optional

  • Camp chairs (sit on logs)
  • Tables (use a flat rock)
  • Extra shoes (one pair is fine)
  • Books (phone works)
  • Jewelry (seriously)
  • Hairdryer (camping is temporary)

The Weigh-In

Before you leave, stand on a bathroom scale with your packed bag. Subtract your body weight. If it's over 40 lbs for a weekend car camping trip, you packed wrong.

Our Recommendation

Challenge yourself: can you fit everything in one bag AND one cooler? If yes, you're officially a minimalist camper.
